Aleutian Umiak from ca. 1805 (model).
Based on Ivan Koriukin's 1805 drawing, as published in Georg Heinrich Von Langsdorff's "Remarks and Observations on a Voyage Around the World from 1803-1807" re-printed in 1993 by the Limestone Press.

The original drawing gives the dimensions as being "32 Fuss" in length, "4 Fuss, 1 Zoll" wide, and "2 Fuss, 3 Zoll" deep in the middle. While Fuss and Zoll do not neccessarily equal modern feet and inches, the umiak can be considered roughly 32 feet long and some 4 feet wide. Not having the space to build and the crew to paddle this craft, I built a model, which measures 37" long. Its a remarkable umiak, with a very high aspect ratio (length-to-breadth); it ought to be made full-size for sea-trials by somebody.
